Think Before You Drink Bottled Water: Using A Reusable Water Bottle Matters

"You can not get by means of a single day with out having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and it's a must to decide what sort of difference you need to make."

- Jane Goodall

On the lookout for an environmentally pleasant thought to tap into? Here is one: ditch the plastic water bottles and begin getting your aqua at home.

An estimated 88% of plastic water bottles are NOT recycled in Canada - a number that is as embarrassing as it is staggering.

With every Canadian consuming 60 litres of bottled water a year - and gross sales surpassing coffee, tea, and milk - this is numerous plastic needlessly piling up in landfills.

In North America, it used to be that about 70 million plastic water bottles ended up in landfills every year.

Immediately, in the US alone, People use an estimated 50 BILLION plastic water bottles kliuk wrote in a blog post a 12 months - and 40 billion of those ended up in landfills.

Holy batman... that could be a LOT of plastic water bottles!

Throughout the globe, near 2.5 billion kilograms of plastic are used to bottle water every year. And this plastic can take as long as 1,000 years to biodegrade. Within the process, poisonous additives are leaching into the groundwater.

As for the amount of oil required to provide mentioned plastic? It takes 17 million barrels of oil each year to make water bottles for the US market. That is the equal of fueling 1 million cars for a year.

But wait, there's more...
Footprint goes past the plastic

Unlike the water you get through your tap at dwelling, bottled water has a bigger environmental footprint because it has to be transported over long distances. Instead of simply being piped into your glass in the kitchen, it arrives by truck, train, airplane, and boat. And all these modes of transport require fossil fuels to get around.

And lots of bottled water manufacturers really use filtered faucet water similar to the water you get at home anyway. Plus, residential faucet water is normally more strictly tested and regulated than bottled water, so it makes little sense to purchase something that is so plentiful and low-cost at home.

Think of the cash you will save

"Buying water in plastic bottles just doesn't make sense financially," explains the Pays to Live Green netsite. "It may possibly value you as much as 2400 times as much to get your water in a one-time use bottle as opposed to getting it from the tap. The typical bottle of water will cost you on average of $.seventy nine compared to just 1/three of a cent out of your faucet."

This is what you can do to reduce the impact of plastic water bottles:

1. Stop buying bottled water - or perhaps start by shopping for less

2. Recycle any disposable plastic water bottles you do use - versus throwing them within the garbage

3. Buy a reusable water bottle and use it at work, on the road, in the gym, etc.

Taking these steps will help to maintain more water the place it should be - outside of a bottle. It'll reduce down on pointless waste in landfills by reducing a number of the hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles dumped daily.

So let's ease up on automatically hitting the bottle and look for what's on tap instead.

Personally, I am a HUGE water drinker. I drink no less than 2 litres of water a day. So you may rarely see me out and about with one in all my trusty Nalgene water bottles in tow. However now and again, if I neglect my water bottle or I run out of water (and there isn't any place to refill it) then I'll purchase a disposable bottle of water. However I certain don't like to.
